Surf Industry Development
The Gold Coast City Council’s Surf Industry Development Report, a World first, was published in September 2009 and has confirmed the massive impact that the surfing industry has on the Gold Coast. It found that there was $2billion in activity attributable to the surfing industry, as widely defined, and that this is estimated to generate up to a further $3bn in output with 21,760 employment positions and $1bn pa in wages and salaries. The area of Currumbin Alley south to Rainbow Bay is central to the true Gold Coast surfing experience.
The report confirms what has long been self evident to locals since before the 1960’s, namely, that the Southern Gold Coast’s north facing beaches, classic point breaks and consistent surf make it the home of surf board riding on the Gold Coast. No wonder it has contributed immensely to the appeal of the Gold Coast as being a “Surfers Paradise”. It is also completely understandable that the Southern Gold Coast continues to uniquely attract internationally-recognized competitions like Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro and is the Gold Coast’s hub for residences of professional surfers, watermen, surf film makers and surf photographers alike.
Breeding grounds for world-class surfers
The Southern Gold Coast has three magnificent award winning Team Board Riders Clubs - The Alley Boardriders, Kirra Surfriders and Snapper Rocks Surfriders.
Boardriders (aka Surfriders) clubs are a breeding ground for future champions of the sport, with senior members of the clubs able to pass on valuable skills to the grommets in the Junior divisions, as they develop their abilities and competition tactics. Boardriders clubs compete in local and national competitions such at the Rhythm Kirra Teams Challenge which is the “World’s largest inter-club surfing teams event”. Each year this amazing competition crowns the best club in Australia, with over 30 of the best boardriding clubs going head-to-head to battle it out for the title of Australia's Best Boardriding Club.
Every Australian World Champion started off his or her career in a local boardriding club. Australian boardriding club team events play such an important part in Australian surfing history. Looking at the champions that these clubs have nurtured, it is not surprising that these clubs are consistently on top of the table when it comes to boardriding clubs. Kirra Surfriders Club lays claim to the likes of Mick Fanning, Asher Pacey and Jack Freestone, The Alley Boardriders can do the same with surfing legend Mark Richardson and Luke Munro, while Snapper Rocks Surfriders boasts champions such as Rabbit Bartholomew, Joel Parkinson, Steph Gilmore, Josh Kerr and Dean Morrison! Our region's boardriding clubs have produced so many of the elite competitors in Australian surfing, demonstrating how strong guidance, fantastic surf breaks and club competitions contribrute to shaping the best of the sports competitors.
