Southern Light Rail Route Preferred by City

Posted on Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Public consultation on future stages of the Gold Coast Light Rail has favoured the Southern Coastal Route as the preferred option for Stage 3 of the public transport system.

The Gold Coast City Council is now looking to commence a feasibility study to bring the Light Rail south to Coolangatta with a major stop proposed at the Gold Coast Airport.

80 percent of the 3606 Gold Coasters surveyed, identified their preference for the $1.5 billion coastal link to Burleigh, with 70 percent wanting a further direct route from Burleigh to the airport.

Mayor Tom Tate is proposing $600,000 be set-aside in the 2016-17 budget to explore the feasibility and potential routes for the project.
