Southern Gold Coast Secures U23 Beach Volleyball Nationals

Posted on Sunday, December 04, 2016

Coolangatta’s Beach Volleyball Courts will once again play host to a nationwide event as the U23 Beach Volleyball National Championships hit the Southern Gold Coast from 20 – 22 January, 2017.

Thirty-two male and 32 female teams will see 128 athletes from Queensland, Australia and New Zealand flock to the region to battle it out on the sand.

City of Gold Coast Division 14 Councillor Gail O’Neill helped to secure the event through divisional funding.

“The new Beach Volleyball courts at Coolangatta are really proving to be such an asset for our area,” said Cr O’Neill. “It is exciting to be able to leverage these opportunities to showcase our beautiful beaches on the national stage.”

Five time Beach Volleyball Olympian and Gold and Bronze Medallist, Natalie Cook, said events like this were necessary to encourage future athletes to the sport.

"Creating opportunities for our future stars to shine is essential. Iconic beaches such as Coolangatta are a breeding ground for success,” said Ms Cook.

“It makes me incredibly proud to know that our next Olympians will come from this group of athletes and along the way inspire thousands of kids to kick their shoes and socks off and get active out on the sand."

Connecting Southern Gold Coast (CSGC) CEO, Peter Doggett, said it was a coup for the Southern Gold Coast to host to the U23 Beach Volleyball National Championships and continue to attract high calibre athletes ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"It’s fantastic to see the Coolangatta Beach Volleyball courts that were installed earlier this year putting the region on the map as a first class beach volleyball venue,” said Mr Doggett.

“They are not only getting some good use ahead of GC2018, but it’s a great opportunity to give the local community an additional activation that’s free to watch and enjoy. Thanks must go to Cr O’Neill for securing the funding to host this national event here on our stage.”

Several additional events will also take place across the weekend, with the SurfVolley Nippers Queensland Cup taking place on the Friday as well as a Corporate Cup set to see local business do battle on the sand, and a Local Celebrity Match to draw crowds on the Saturday of competition.

The Coolangatta Beach Volleyball Courts are an initiative of Connecting Southern Gold Coast and are proudly presented by The Strand at Coolangatta.
