Southern Gateway in Lights

Posted on Monday, January 08, 2018

The first half of the city’s new public art commission is nearing completion and on track to light up the southern Gold Coast early in the New Year.

Located in front of the Gold Coast Airport at Bilinga, the big “GC” will welcome visitors and residents to the city by day and night.

Division 14 Councillor Gail O’Neill said it was exciting to see this significant art project progressing and taking shape.

“It is as stunning as I imagined and wonderful to see it in the ground,” Cr O’Neill said.

The northern artwork, a much larger installation, will appear to spell out the city’s name and will be installed on the Pacific Highway at Yatala in early January.

Councillor O’Neill said the complexity of the design required significant engineering input to ensure the best possible outcome for the city.

The Gateways Public Art Commission was awarded to New York based LOT-EK artists Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano earlier this year for the design featuring nearly 100 modified highway lights and poles, closely spaced at different heights.

The Gateway Public Art Commission is co-funded by the State Government and City of Gold Coast. This is a $2 million artist commission – the commission includes design, fabrication and installation for artwork at both a northern and southern site.

An independent selection panel, a cross section of industry, stakeholder and community representatives, selected the winning entry out of a local, national and international pool.
