With a passion for investigating social and political events within the creative arts, it was the ability to teach, research, publish and volunteer in those same areas that motivated Professor Adam Shoemaker to pursue a career in academics.
With a resume including an undergraduate Honours degree at Queen’s University in Ontario Canada, a PhD at the Australian National University in Canberra as a Commonwealth Scholar and a long history of senior leadership roles at a number of Australian universities, he has enjoyed a fruitful 28 years in the industry.
Stepping into the Vice Chancellor role at Southern Cross University in September 2016, Professor Shoemaker’s focus is clear.
“I hope to be able to inspire one of Australia’s youngest and most progressive universities to be one of its best. We have something distinctive and different to offer.”
Southern Cross University opened its first building in 2010 and now—eight years later— has 6,000 students in such areas as Allied Health, Nursing and Midwifery, Law and Education.
“The growth has been phenomenal. There is no question that our visible and easily accessible location at the Gold Coast Airport is contributing positively to this demand,” he said.
“This growth has meant that we have opened our third building ahead of schedule.”
“Our new, 560-seat lecture theatre will enable us to host conferences in concert with the new Airport Hotel, and to work closely in areas like tourism and hospitality management. We are also well placed to expand into executive education and short course delivery; both online and in person.”
Not only expanding its facilities, Southern Cross University is constantly evolving to meet the demands of the everchanging modern workforce; an aspect that Professor Shoemaker said has been a priority.
“We are convinced that a ‘go to’ campus needs what you could call ‘destination degrees’,” he said.
“For example, this year we introduced a new degree in Digital Business. It responds to one of the most strategic and fast-growing areas of the modern workforce, in such areas as online marketing and data science.”
“We also believe that degrees that are unique to our Gold Coast campus—like Osteopathy and Podiatry—will add to the health workforce in Queensland and beyond in very important ways.”
Southern Cross University will welcome its new Dean of Business, Professor Robin Stonecash in March 2018, opening the door to the region's business community.
“As Head of the Gold Coast campus and as a recognised expert in graduate business education, Professor Stonecash will add a level of expertise and talent which will be dynamic and exciting.”
“At Southern Cross we believe in real engagement with the community and with what people need—now and into the future. We believe that our job is to translate what goes on in the backyard—our region, into the front yard—our nation, and to the rest of the world.”
