From humble beginnings making homemade Christmas gifts in a garage, Currumbin’s own Kelly Lane has evolved into one of Australia’s leading gift and homeware wholesalers.

The family owned and operated business has kept up with the trends for more than 21 years, creating a line of quality home and giftwares that reflect the spirit of Australia’s sub-tropical and beach lifestyles, particularly those on the Southern Gold Coast.

Creative Director, Kelly Nyssen, has been the backbone of the business since day one in 1996, never losing sight of her idea to fill a gap she recognised in the market: creative homewares.

“I started making Christmas presents with a girlfriend in her garage. We purchased a saw from Carrara Markets and her husband helped us cut the frames for us to decorate them,” Kelly said.

“I have a small family and I made too many gifts so I decided to give them to a store in The Pines called Living and Giving to sell on consignment. They all sold and they requested more.”

So began Kelly Lane’s story and today, the award-winning business has not only taken out titles such as the Youth Small Business Award and Best Medium Stand Winner at the Reed Gift Fair Melbourne 2017, but now has more than 1,000 stockists across the nation retailing their home and giftwares.

With all their products designed in Currumbin, Kelly Lane also draws upon the talents of local artists, both in house and external, capturing the Southern Gold Coast lifestyle in their designs.

“I still love making products for everyone, from the initial thoughts to turning artwork into usable products with the team. Now I take a lot of pleasure going abroad and seeing other factories working with our designs. I love seeing our products going international.”

Inspired by the relaxed coastal lifestyle the business has formed its foundations in, Kelly Lane has enjoyed much success due to Currumbin’s central location.

“Living on the Gold Coast is inspiration enough for me. I love being outdoors and I’m always challenged to bring our awesome lifestyle inside. Living here is hard to describe; I tell people that we live in the best but holiday in the rest!”

“The flexibility that the region offers us, and in an unbelievable environment, is what we love most about having a business here.”

Today, Kelly Lane remains a family owned and operated business, something which has given Kelly great pride in raising her children around. Leaving the strategy and marketing to her husband Chris, who Kelly dubs ‘the business brain’, has seen the dynamic duo evolve the business from an idea to a successful venture.

“We have been in it together from the start. I’ve wanted to give up a few times and Chris has taken on more of the pressures over time. Our team is also what makes us special. They all live local and are invested in the community, are hardworking and caring.”

“We love what we do and who we do it with.”

Looking to the horizon, Kelly Lane hopes to continue their success through the production of unique and quality giftware. “We would love to keep supplying giftware and are always looking to expand into new areas while remaining unique and producing the best quality we can.”

Like any start up, Kelly has experienced her fair share of setbacks over the past 21 years of business; perhaps the biggest being told her business wasn’t viable in its early stages. Despite all doubts, Kelly persevered and is now enjoying the fruits of her labour, giving her the simple ability to be creative while earning money.

“If I had one piece of advice for someone starting a business, it would be to keep original and true to yourself. It is so hard to remain strong in your beliefs when the time gets tough but is so rewarding to complete the challenge and bring your ideas to the market.”

“While it’s not always easy and not always successful, bank the knowledge on failed attempts and always remember the journey. Business is 90% hard work and 10% luck, so strap yourself in!”
