Kites and Bikes to Converge on Kirra in October

Posted on Friday, August 04, 2017

Kirra will be flying high on Saturday 21 October, with the return of two iconic events on the same day – the Kirra Criterium and the Gold Coast Festival of Kites. Kicking off with a kids cycling challenge, families can come down for a whole day of exciting action on the road and in the sky.

A much-loved community event, the biennial Gold Coast Festival of Kites returns once again with the country’s best kite flyers converging on Kirra to create a spectacle to remember.

Kirra Beach will be full of amazing kites and stunt displays from 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Visitors can watch the spectacle, fly their own kite, and enjoy the displays of this free, fun-filled family day.

Running in conjunction with the Kite Festival on the Saturday, the country’s most elite cyclists will compete on a thrilling 1.2 kilometre circuit with one of the best backdrops for cycle racing in the country, as the Kirra Criterium Classic provides a unique opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of racing in Kirra’s main precinct.

Local kids will also be the stars of this year’s Criterium, with the all-inclusive Kids on 2 Wheels cycling challenge kicking off at 10am on the Saturday. Kids aged 3 – 12 can bring their own bike and helmet and ‘race’ along the closed circuit course to get involved in the fun. Every child that participates will receive a prize.

These events are proudly presented by Cycle Sense = Excellence, Connecting Southern Gold Coast, City of Gold Coast, Armstrong Real Estate and Tugun Community Bank® Branch Bendigo Bank, helping to raise awareness for the Amy Gillett Foundation, aiming to reduce the incidence of serious injury and death of cyclists in Australia.
