The first Gold Coast International Festival of Kites was held on September 26 – 27, with kites flying across the Gold Coast at Kirra, Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise. Locals and visitors on School Holidays turned out in droves to watch the spectacular kite displays and join in the kite flying fun.
Organised by Connecting Southern Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise Alliance and Broadbeach Alliance, the weekend of kites involved international Kite Masters from Germany, Malaysia, Canada and New Zealand, plus some of Australia’s best kite flyers who couldn’t wait to fly their kites on our wide sandy beaches.
It was a free family-friendly event that built on the former Kirra Kite Festival concept, and even with some storms on the horizon, over 3000 people attended the Kirra site across the weekend.
Reports from local traders were mostly positive with increased business across the weekend due to the influx of visitors to the area.
Thanks must go to media partners 1029 Hot Tomato and NBN for their promotion across the weekend, plus Scoot Airlines for donating the fantastic prizes of 2 Scoot Travel Vouchers valued at $400 each.
It’s exciting to see the Southern Gold Coast event calendar growing each year, and we look forward to more events over the coming months as we head into summer.
