A stone’s throw from the iconic coastline that we know and love so much is the Southern Gold Coast hinterland. One of the region’s best kept secrets offers a range of gems waiting to be explored. Just 10-15 minutes’ drive from the coast, the hinterland makes for an ideal quick trip, a lazy weekend drive or a full day of adventure.

Scenic drives: Experience the natural beauty of this region at your own pace. Winding roads that climb through lush rainforests and sweeping coastal views showcase all that this stunning region has to offer. You can’t miss a drive through the McPherson Range, promising northerly, easterly and westerly views from the Hinterland to the Pacific Ocean and beyond.

Catch the view: The hinterland is located amongst what is known as Australia’s Green Cauldron, a caldera created by Mount Warning’s volcanic eruption millions of years ago. A series of panoramic views of breath-taking escarpments, mountains and valleys fanning out from the Southern Gold Coast can be seen from the Arthur Freeman Lookout on Tomewin Mountain Road.

Sleep amongst nature: Stay amongst the lush tropical vegetation in some of the most beautiful boutique accommodation. This area is home to a range of accommodation varieties that suit families, travellers on a budget or couples on a romantic getaway. Choose from cottages, Bed and Breakfasts, retreats and homesteads and awake to the refreshing air and sweet, serene sounds of nature.

Pack a picnic: Being surrounded by endless natural beauty makes picking a picnic spot in the hinterland no easy feat. For sweeping views, look no further than the Arthur Freeman Lookout. For rainforest surrounds, there is nothing better than the Mount Cougal Section of Springbrook National Park. Nestled deep in the valley is the Ridge Top Park on Currumbin Creek Road.

Grab a cuppa: This is the ideal destination to sit back and relax over a coffee. The hinterland is dotted with numerous cafes that are perfect for a quick pick me up or a bite to eat. There is nothing quite like an afternoon pick-me-up surrounded by the stunning rainforest.

Visit the Eco Village: Once you discover all that the hinterland has to offer, it’s impossible not to fall in love. The Eco Village is an award winning sustainable community in Currumbin and has been named the World’s Best Environmental Development. Despite being set in the hinterland, is still only a short drive from the coast. Ideal for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle, this is living as close to nature as it gets.

Explore on foot: What better way to experience the hidden treasures of this region than on foot. The Cougals Cascade Walk, located in Springbrook National Park, is a 3km round trip through the sub-tropical rainforest. With viewing platforms and an abundance of flora and fauna, get up close and personal with the natural beauty of the Hinterland.

Take a dip: After a long day behind the wheel, the cleansing waters of the hinterland are sure to leave you feeling refreshed. The Currumbin Valley rock pools are a local favourite and a great spot to explore the babbling creek or swimming hole. The Cougals Cascades are a top spot to have a dip in the cool, rushing waters.
