Division 14 Update from Cr. O'Neill

Welcome to the Christmas edition of my monthly Councillor Newsletter. As your Councillor, I am passionate about serving the needs of residents, schools, businesses and community groups within Division 14.

During the festive season, this office will close at 4.30pm Friday 21 December and will re-open 8.30am Wednesday 2 January. If you require City services during this period please phone 1300 694 222 during business hours or afterhours on 1800 637 000.

Local Area Works

Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway
The Oceanway path will be open to the public from Friday 7 December with only minor landscaping and street furnishing works to follow. There will be a community celebration in early January. Residents will be notified of the event date once confirmed. Funding for the Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway project was approved in the City Budget 2018-19. For more information click here.

Golden Four Drive, Road Upgrades
The installation of an additional 37 parking spaces on the western side of Golden Four Drive between Dune Street and Short Street is now complete. The upgrade of Golden Four Drive between Short Street and Gibson Street are due to commence in early 2019 with the majority of parking to remain.

Reconstruction Works, Currumbin Creek – Tomewin Mountain Road
Reconstruction works by the Department of Main Roads are ongoing on Currumbin Creek - Tomewin Mountain Road following severe ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie with works expected to be completed by late 2018. Working hours will be 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday with weekend and night work as required. For an estimated three month period during the works, Currumbin Creek - Tomewin Mountain Road will be reduced to one-lane in several locations with traffic controlled by temporary signals.

Redwood Park, Tallebudgera
Works will commence on 17 December to install a rubber softfall pad under the swing set and undertake minor changes to the playground equipment at Redwood Park, Tallebudgera. These works are due to be completed by 22 December.

Tugun Lights Up
Tugun Lights Up returns to Tooloona Street on 1 December from 4.00pm-8.30pm to kick off a month long celebration of Christmas in Tugun Village. Now in its 6th year, this free family event promotes the village spirit as the community comes together to enjoy the Christmas lights displays in shopfront windows. Dine under the stars next to the iconic Fig trees, browse the Christmas market stalls and enjoy the Christmas entertainment including competitions with prizes and a Santa visit.

Tugun Community Bank® Branch Scholarship Program
– Applications open on 3 December for eligible students in the local district attending university or TAFE for the first time in 2019. Two scholarships are available to help cover the various costs of further studies. Each scholarship is worth $5000.00 per year for up to 2 years. Coolangatta Christmas Carols
Coolangatta’s Queen Elizabeth Park will come alive with the spirit of Christmas on Sunday 9 December. This free family-friendly evening will feature Melbourne’s Dennis Walter as the headline act, Christmas markets, food trucks, a fireworks display and a special visit from Santa who will skydive onto Coolangatta Beach in true Southern Gold Coast style. Browse the Christmas markets from 4.00pm before the main show at 5.30pm. Please bring your own refillable water bottle to support this plastic-free event.

Currumbin Community Christmas Carols
Jingle all the way to the annual Currumbin Community Christmas Carols on Monday 10 December from 5.30pm to 8.00pm at
Galleon Park, Currumbin Waters. Proudly supported by Division 14 Cr Gail O’Neill – celebrate the season with a traditional Christmas concert and lots of free family activities including; roving entertainment, glow-inthe-dark face painting, jumping castle, hula hoops, poi balls, a spectacular laser light show and a visit from Santa.We’ll have you singing and dancing to your favourite Christmas songs for a chance to win one of our great prizes. Remember your torch, chair or picnic blanket and enjoy a festive food truck feast. For more information click here.

Level Up studio + gallery exhibition
I was honoured to have recently opened the City of Gold Coast’s Level Up art space at Shop 143, Level 1 The Strand, Coolangatta (near the library). The Gallery is open to the public Monday to Friday between 9.00am to 5.00pm (Please note: the Gallery will be closed between 24 December and 1 January). Level Up’s first public exhibition One Up Group Show features the works of five unique, young emerging artists from around the Gold Coast. Exhibition dates from 23 November 2018 to 6 January 2019. Next time you’re visiting the Strand, pop on in to support our young artists.

Level Up Community Day
Level Up will fling open its doors on Saturday 15 December from 9.00am to 3.00pm, inviting locals of all ages to check out the new art space and join in on the free creative workshops available on the day including: ‘zero waste’ denim doll-making, mini maker’s station, Art Bites session on painting botanical artwork using watercolour, or simply enjoy a cuppa and snack at the ‘Bikkie lounge’. Agape Outreach Christmas Party
Agape Outreach will be hosting a Christmas Party for the homeless and needy on Wednesday 19 December from 4.30pm at Goodwin Park, Coolangatta (beside the skate park). A three course Christmas dinner with entertainment, haircuts, manicures,
face-painting and a visit from Santa will be provided free of charge. Bookings are not required however please call 0414 963 670 to register children for Santa’s visit.

Coolangatta New Year’s Eve Fireworks
The Southern Gold Coast will welcome in the New Year with two fireworks displays at Coolangatta Beach on New Year’s Eve at
9.00pm and midnight.
