Local Area Works

Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway
The first section of the Oceanway project between Bilinga SLSC and Surf Street is complete and open to the public. The path between Surf Street and John Street is expected to be completed on Wednesday 3 October. Works are continuing to Short Street with an estimated completion in mid-October (Weather Permitting). Works will also be commencing from the Northern end of the path in mid-October. Council is awaiting supply of improved lighting fixtures.

As part of the project, the City will undertake restoration works to all disturbed areas, with the project scheduled for completion in December 2018. Funding for the project was approved in the City Budget 2018-19. For more information visit: http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/tugun-to-bilingaoceanway-project-42300.html

Speed Awareness Devices
Portable speed awareness devices are temporarily installed in streets across the Gold Coast where speeding has been identified as an issue. These ‘Smiley Face’ digital signs have been shown to achieve a significant reduction in speeding. Speed Awareness Devices will soon be deployed in the following streets for four months; Kent Street, Coolangatta; Golden Four Drive, Tugun; Bienvenue Drive, Currumbin; and Toolona Street, Tugun.

Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew Bridge plaque
The plaque to commemorate the naming of the pedestrian bridge which connects Kropp Park with Len Wort Park along the Currumbin Oceanway has been raised to make it more visible to pedestrians and cyclists.

Queen Elizabeth II Park
Park Rectification and Improvement works at QEII Park are complete and the park has been re-opened to the public.

Palmer Family Park, Currumbin
Following concerns raised by residents regarding hooning in Palmer Family Park, low profile log barriers and a swing park gate have been installed to restrict unauthorised access to the park.

Garrick Street, Coolangatta
The existing 2 lane traffic arrangements in Garrick Street, Coolangatta will be modified to one-way to improve safety.

Golden Four Drive, Road Upgrades
An additional 37 parking spaces are being installed on the western side of Golden Four Drive between Dune Street and Short Street. These works are due to be completed by 30 October. Plans for the upgrade of Golden Four Drive between Short Street and Gibson Street are complete with the majority of parking to remain. These works are due to commence in early 2019.

Koala Breeding Season VMS Signage
During the peak koala breeding season months of July to November, there is an increase in koala movements and therefore an increase in the risk that koalas will come into contact with urban threats, including vehicles. City of Gold Coast will be deploying Variable Message Signs (VMS) on hot spot roads in an attempt to reduce koala fatalities. During this rotation, Koala Breeding Season VMS’s will be deployed at Simpsons Road and Guineas Creek Road.

Stormwater drainage upgrade, Boundary Street
Currumbin – The Boundary Street Drainage Upgrade Project is ongoing with an expected completion in December 2018. The construction of a new underground drainage system along the southern end of Boundary Street between Jewel Street and Judeller Road will improve excess water flows during storm events and discharge water into the Judeller Road Drainage Reserve. Following completion of the underground works, the road will be reconstructed (including new kerb and driveway crossovers) between Jewel Street and Hayter Street.

Reconstruction Works, Currumbin Creek – Tomewin Mountain Road
Reconstruction works by the Department of Main Roads are ongoing on Currumbin Creek - Tomewin Mountain Road following severe ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie with works expected to be completed by late 2018. Working hours will be 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday with weekend and night work as required. For an estimated three month period during the works, Currumbin Creek - Tomewin Mountain Road will be reduced to one-lane in several locations with traffic controlled by temporary signals.
