Kirra Boardwalk renewal project
Works are now nearing completion to renew the iconic Kirra Boardwalk. The renewal project will involve a complete removal of the existing boardwalk and sub-structure, installation of concrete piers and precast architectural finished concrete deck and reinstallation of the existing handrail. The footpath and road reopened to the general public before Christmas. Minor finishing works will be completed by 20 January.
Road reconstruction, Boundary Street
Road reconstruction works along Boundary Street (Hill Street to Ward Street) will reconvene 20 January with works due to be completed February 2020 (weather permitting).
Coolangatta and Kirra Business Centres Place Based Master Plan
The Coolangatta and Kirra Business Centres Place Based Master Plan has been endorsed through full Council.
Congratulations Green Heroes for being awarded with a ‘Community Hero’ award at the annual QLD Community Achievement Awards. With funding through Division 14’s Divisional Donations grant round, Green Heroes recently hosted a family workshop on native wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in collaboration with Wildcare Australia Inc. Part of the workshop included a mock wildlife hospital in which children were able to engage wildlife ‘rescue, care and rehabilitation’. With this same funding, Green Heroes has been able to continue with its regular workshops including its ‘Pouches for Joeys Sewing Bees’. The sewing bees have been particularly productive in response to the many orphaned animals coming into care during the bushfire season.
Currumbin Community Christmas Carols
It was a fantastic night at the annual Currumbin Community Christmas Carols on Monday 9 December. The local community came together in the spirit of Christmas to honour and raise funds for our heroes, The Currumbin Valley Rural Fire Brigade.
The Currumbin Tennis Club and Dragons Abreast
These two groups got together at our recent Division 14 ‘Thank You Morning Tea’. As both groups are looking for new members, they made a commitment to support each other with members of the tennis club agreeing to try dragon
boating for the first time and members of Dragons Abreast agreeing to a friendly tennis match.
The Currumbin Tennis Club has been established for over 80 years and welcomes new members. Starting at 8.30am, social tennis is played on Wednesdays (ladies), Thursdays (mixed) and Fridays (ladies only). For more information or to book a court online visit: https://www.tennis.com.au/currumbintennis/
Dragons Abreast Gold Coast is a dragon boat club which operates on the beautiful Currumbin Creek and is the only breast cancer survivor club on the Gold Coast. All members of the community - both supporters and survivors - are
welcome. Dragon boating is an affordable and accessible sport catering for all ages and levels of fitness. The group trains three times per week during summer and twice a week in winter. Your first three paddles are free, so give dragon boating a go today. Register your interest at: www.dragonsabreastgoldcoast.com.au.
Seaside Sounds will return to Kirra’s Roughton Park in January and February 2020 with free live music for everyone from 5pm-7pm over five consecutive Saturdays commencing Saturday 18 January to Saturday 15 February (inclusive). Free facepainting and jumping castle for the kids. This is a family friendly event and no alcohol is permitted in the park.
Shout Out Fest
The annual celebration of young people aged 12-25 and their contribution to our community is locked in for 1-9 April 2020. This year’s Queensland Youth Week theme is ‘Yeah the youth!’ which is a call to friendship, strength and unity between young people and a celebration of who they are and what they offer to our community. Division 14 will celebrate youth week on Saturday 4 April with a free youth event at Tugun Park.
