CSGC Profile – Jenny Madigan – Owner, Greenhouse Canteen + Bar

Having worked in hospitality in various corners of the world from the USA to Dubai, New Zealand and Europe, Jenny Madigan says that when the opportunity to own Coolangatta’s Greenhouse Canteen and Bar presented itself, it just felt right.

After finishing a degree in Sustainability and having time off from the workforce to raise her son, Jenny was eager to get back in the game and the plant based ethos was a large part of what attracted her to Greenhouse.

How did Greenhouse Canteen come to be?
I had been a customer at Greenhouse and was very impressed by the quality of food and ambience at the restaurant. When I saw them advertise for franchisees I set up a meeting and it all started from there. I had a strong personal connection with the owner Natalie and that was the deciding factor in me taking the leap into being Greenhouse’s first franchisee.

Can you tell us what Greenhouse Canteen is all about?
Greenhouse is primarily a restaurant like any other, where you can go for a date night or a meal with family and friends or for a special occasion. In addition, we create delicious and unique dishes while promoting a cruelty free way of dining through our plant based food and ethos of ‘it’s cool to be kind’.

People are becoming more and more aware that animal agriculture is not good for the planet and is not sustainable. Greenhouse is proud to be a part of the change in culture that is taking place. As well as being sustainable through our plant based meals we were excited to be the first restaurant in Queensland to receive the Ocean Friendly accreditation from Surfrider Foundation for our efforts to minimise our plastic use as well as other eco initiatives we use.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw a lot of inspiration from Natalie the founder of Greenhouse. I also get a lot of inspiration from my staff at the restaurant. When it comes to the food, we have drawn inspiration from travelling and a love of dining out, all over the Gold Coast, Australia and the world.

What makes Greenhouse Canteen different?
We pride ourselves on staying ahead of the food game and always like to offer dishes that you may not get elsewhere. Even though plant based dining is becoming more popular we feel that the service, food and experience of coming to Greenhouse is hard to beat.

What do you love the most about having a business in Coolangatta?
The Southern Gold Coast in particular is like paradise for me. Having lived in many different places I can finally say that I have found a place to call home. It really is a special place and I have to pinch myself regularly that I get to live and work here. There is a genuine sense of community in the Southern suburbs and it really is one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
