This month we ventured out to the very end of the Currumbin Valley to Eden Health Retreat, which for more than 30 years has been a haven for those who need a bit of time out from the world.
While offering the utmost seclusion, the holistic health retreat is less than 30 minutes’ drive from the coast, set on immaculate grounds surrounded by the sounds of nature, deep in the heart of the Valley.
Eden is the only retreat in Australia offering an all day, everyday program, where guests can take part in as much or as little as they like. With a focus on health and wellness through exercise, treatments and healthy eating, the program at Eden combines daily activities and education, with onsite facilities including a fully equipped gymnasium, Spa and Wellness Center, tennis courts, sauna, steam room, heated outdoor swimming pool and spa, and natural mud bath.
There is no WiFi, mobile phone reception, televisions or newspapers – meaning you really can step away from the world as we know it.
The site is steeped in local history, with the dense rainforest cleared back in the 19th Century to make way for fruit trees and dairy farming, and later becoming one of the largest banana plantations in Australia.
Following decades of farming the area was cleared, and Camp Eden was established in 1984. Now known as Eden Health Retreat, it prides itself on running a low-impact, eco-friendly business. The whole property is almost completely solar-powered, and the menu features locally and organically sourced produce where possible.
The unique retreat program attracts international visitors, many coming from New Zealand, the UK and Canada, as well as all around Australia, with a maximum of 45 guests meaning it is often booked out months in advance.
But it is no small operation. With a minimum stay of five days up to 21 days, plus all meals included, treatment rooms, an all-day program and acres of grounds to maintain, it takes close to 70 staff to contribute to the running of Eden day to day.
While the owners and staff don’t draw too much attention to the details of the retreat – therein lies its appeal. Apart from rejuvenating the mind and body, there is no doubt more on offer than meets the eye at Eden. You’ll just have to see for yourself!
