Business Success Case Study: Dino & Kate Georgakopoulos from Xenia Grill

Posted on Tuesday, January 22, 2019

Dino and Kate Georgakopoulos opened their restaurant, Xenia Greek Grill, under Coolangatta's Beach House Resort in 2016, bringing a much-needed injection of Greek street food to the Coolangatta dining scene. Three years after opening the doors, they knew they needed to take the time to reflect on their business and what it needed to ensure they continued their success. The Business Success program run by CSGC and TAFE Queensland provided the opportunity they were looking for.

1. When did you participate in the Business Success Program?
June 2018

2. What were some of the practical outcomes you took away from the course?
We completely re-wrote our business plan, resetting goals, reviewing our target customers, looking at our current financial situation etc. After 3 years in business it was great to gain clarity about what we actually wanted to achieve and set targets for the next 3 years.

3. What new ideas or initiatives have you put in place in your business as a result?
Since completing the program we’ve recruited staff in key roles including Front of House Manager and Head Chef, allowing us to focus on working on the business. Throughout the course we identified weaknesses in our offering and set goals to improve these. This included things that required immediate attention – such as paying off bad debt. As a result we’ve stopped using credit cards and are paying off our existing credit cards.
We’ve also set annual goals for the next three years and set strategies in place on how to achieve these.

4. Have you seen your business improve seen since implementing these ideas?
Yes. We have been more focused on what needs to be done and we have been able to clearly identify which items need to be addressed first. We have been able to set out a very clear road map of what needs to happen.

5. Would you recommend the course to other local small businesses?
Absolutely 100%! Taking time out away from everything to dissect the business and rebuild our plans has been very beneficial. Having the assistance of an experienced business coach in order to achieve this as part of this program has been priceless.

Want to focus on your business success in 2019? Our subsidised Business Success Program is back for another year, with the first intake in February.
