Light Rail – the Big Issue

The Federal election is offering the SGC an opportunity to press for Light Rail as a key part of social, commercial and tourist infrastructure.

In a recent meeting with Cr Eddie Saroff and Cr Chris Robbins and some of our business people, Cr Saroff correctly made the point that, “if the Southern Gold Coast wants Light Rail, then the region had better come together and  lobby hard for it, starting now”.

The real issue, is that we should not presume that just because we have the Airport in our midst, that the Southern Gold Coast will somehow miraculously benefit from Light Rail from Coolangatta to points north.

The facts are, that the Southern Gold Coast is only approximately 5.0% of the overall Gold Coast population and others may see, what they perceive to be, more important and competing needs further north in our Shire. Hence the encouragement from Cr Saroff and Robins to not rest on our laurels and think that the World owes us a Light Rail connection- we must fight for it, as a community!

Every business and citizen of the Southern Gold Coast (Currumbin Valley/Currumbin to Coolangatta/Rainbow Bay) should write a letter to the Mayor with a copy to Cr Robbins stating that Light Rail is critically important to the economic and social prospects of the Southern Gold Coast (including reducing our 10.0% + unemployment); the reduction of the number of vehicles on the Gold Coast Highway as expansions take place to the throughput of the Airport and the population growth of Tweed/Cobaki Lakes region; and the connectivity of the Southern Gold Coast for purposes of enabling tourist traverses to the region from other parts of the Gold Coast.

Tugun Progress Association Meeting

Posted on August 2nd, 2010 by admin

The meeting is at 7.30pm on Monday, 16th August, at the Tugun Progress Hall, 433 Golden Four Drive.

There will be two speakers.  Jim Wilson GM of Connecting Southern Gold Coast, will speak about issues relevant to our end of the coast, and John Fradgley from Bell Legal Group, will speak about 4CRB community radio.

There will be little general business, except for a short report on the Energex powerline situation.

Great South East Feature | Currumbin Valley

Posted on August 2nd, 2010 by admin

Last week we had the pleasure of showing the Great South East production team the beauty that abounds in our very own Currumbin Valley, as they were shooting a feature on the Walks & Lookouts of the Southern Gold Coast for the Channel 7 program!

The segment also featured the walk from Point Danger to Kirra along the Southern Points Promenade and views from Kirra Hill to showcase the fantastic free and healthy activities available to locals and visitors alike!

Keep your eye out for the feature which will go to air over the coming months!
