On Wednesday 16 September, Connecting Southern Gold Coast hosted a Southern Gold Coast Business Strategy Seminar at the Currumbin RSL Club. The Seminar was jointly hosted by the Institute of Business Leaders.

The aim of the Seminar was to obtain input of  local businesses into the preparation of an Economic Development Master Plan for the Southern Gold Coast. Over 90 businesses were represented.

Major issues highlighted included the need for improved public transport and infrastructure; public safety issues, particularly late at night;  the need for future development to be environmentally sustainable; improved Broadband coverage; reduction in local government infrastructure charges; implementation of daylight saving; and closer cooperation with the Tweed Shire.

The Institute of Business Leaders has been engaged to implement a series of industry sector forums over coming months, leading to production of a document that can be shared with the Gold Coast City Council and other levels of Government, in the hope of achieving better progress and funding for our region.

Connecting Southern Gold Coast Ltd is pleased to announce that it has formed a strategic relationship with Soccer’s Gold Coast Champions Cup, to trial an inaugural Beach Soccer tournament at Kirra from September 30 to October 2 this year.

“The Kirra tournament will mirror the Champions Cup Field format, which will be held at the northern end of the Gold Coast the week before. It will bring youth Soccer and cultural exchange to the Southern Gold Coast, which will be a first for not only the Southern Gold Coast, but also the Gold Coast itself,” said Jim Wilson, General Manager of Connecting Southern Gold Coast.

“It also offers us an unparalleled opportunity to promote the Southern Gold Coast internationally using the “Pure Gold” logo and branding. Beach Soccer is extremely popular overseas and we in the Southern Gold Coast want to be on the ground floor of its introduction and expansion in Australia. Our southern beaches are perfect for it!” Mr Wilson said.

Mr Wilson went on to say that, “We have agreed in principle with the organizers of the Gold Coast Champions Cup that we will form a working relationship with them to develop a fully fledged tournament at Kirra in 2010, because we believe that a Kirra International Beach Soccer tournament can grow to make an enormous impact on the profile and economic prospects for the Southern Gold Coast, by showcasing our beaches, lifestyle and culture around the World.”

“I encourage all soccer players aged 10 years to open and who are registered with a Soccer or Futsal Club to form a team and participate in this exciting Tournament by contacting Jeff Kemp on 0438 184994,” Mr Wilson said.
Mr Wilson said that he congratulated the Gold Coast City Council’s Special Event’s department and the Kirra Surf Life Saving Club for making contributions to the Gold Coast Champions Cup, as well.
