Eco Chic
EcoChic.com.au is the vision of Gold Coast-based interior designers, Cris Bucknall and Paula Breckman. The design duo recognised that there were several gaps in the market that no national furniture company was filling:
- A demand for eco friendly products and sustainable furniture
- A growing population that likes to shop from home
- Regional customers who simply don’t have access to good quality, chic furniture stores
“Our online furniture sales allow people to take all the stress out of shopping for home furnishings and spend more time doing the things they love, says co-founder Paula Breckman, and for the regional customers, we ship our eco friendly furniture and home accessories all over Australia, for the minimal shipping cost possible. We also have made it a policy to accept returns for any reason and will refund the shipping cost to clients”.
Eco Chic’s furniture and homewares ranges run from modern furniture to vintage pieces, but everything works back together and different items are meant to be mixed and matched.
The company offers a comprehensive contemporary furniture selection from sofas to accessories, lamps to bedding...a complete one-stop-shop for home furnishings that are not mass produced and are often unique items.
Sustainable products are not just those that are good for the environment, although that is an important component. They must also be safe and healthy for the people who interact with them, socially sustainable and economically sustainable. Eco Chic looks at the entire lifecycle of its eco-friendly furniture and homewares and each item must meet at least one of six criteria:
1.
Renewable resources: A resource that can be replenished at a rate equal to or greater than its rate of depletion. A great example of this is hemp products which are also grown without pesticides and using very little water.
2.
Recycled and recyclable materials: Recycled products contain re-used, re-conditioned or re-manufactured furniture or parts of furniture into a new product, as well as recycled raw material.
3.
Non-toxic & non allergenic materials: Furniture made with and from materials that are not poisonous, harmful, or otherwise destructive to an organism upon exposure.
4.
Made in Australia: By buying furniture and homewares made in Australia, you are benefiting the local community and the economy as well as reducing its carbon footprint.
5.
Fair Trade certified: FINE aptly defines this as “a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, which seeks greater equity in international trade.
6.
GECA Certified: (http://www.geca.org.au) Many of our green products are either wholly or partly made from materials that are GECA certified: “The Australian ‘Good Environmental Choice’ program provides to the community an environmental mark of recognition for a wide range of products and services.
Bucknall and Breckman realise the demand for green products is often outweighed by the difficulty in finding them.
“People want to spend their money responsibly, but we don’t think they should have to get a degree in environmental science or hunt around endlessly asking questions about each potential purchase”, says Bucknall.
Eco Chic does the groundwork, scouring Australia and abroad for eco-friendly and fair trade products and bringing them to clients with a chic and easy shopping experience.
