The original heart of the Gold Coast, Coolangatta is the Southern Gold Coast’s CBD. This friendly, vibrant village is home to a thriving business community, an abundance of interesting shops, al fresco restaurants, cafes, clubs, pubs, live entertainment, cinemas and beachfront markets.
Coolangatta combines business with leisure to create a lifestyle that’s the envy of people around the world. Since the 1890s, generations of holidaymakers have returned year after year to soak up its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches and quality accommodation, including family style apartments, many with spectacular ocean views.
Its proximity to Gold Coast Airport makes Coolangatta the ‘gateway to the world’! Fly direct to and from international destinations such as Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand and Fiji, and other Australian business and holiday hotspots, including Cairns, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Townsville and Newcastle.
Coolangatta’s broad white sandy beach stretches over a kilometre. At the southern end is Greenmount, a small, rocky, tree-lined headland and sheltered beach, patrolled year round, that’s a favourite with families, novice swimmers and surfers. Take the kids for a short trek around Greenmount headland and you might see some popular locals. Huge pods of dolphins inhabit this area and are often spotted frolicking in the waves off the headland.
Coolangatta’s beachfront markets, held on the second Sunday of every month, are a popular local attraction and a great family day out. Around 150 friendly stallholders display hand-made arts and crafts, as well as fresh regional produce and a delicious array of food.
Doug Roughton bought Greenmount beach alive in the 50's & 60's with it's very own radio station, and created the a buzz with the Hokey Pokey. In the track below you can hear Doug as voice over on the re-recorded Coolangatta promotional song "It's hot in Brisbane but it's Cool-angatta!" the track was reproduced at Love St Studios in early 2011.
